PREVENTIVE CARE
Septic tank filters should be cleaned twice a year in the spring and in the fall. In the spring, when you take out your hose, use it to clean your filter. Do the same before rolling it up in the fall.
WATER USAGE
Avoid excessive and unnecessary water usage. For example, if you’re using automatic washers and dishwashers, wash full loads each time.
PERIODIC OCCUPANCY
If you vacate your house or building for an extended period of time during the winter months, or if freezing temperatures are forecasted, make sure that there’s a layer of insulation on the surface of your septic tank. Extra insulation (leaves, straw, sawdust and snow) on the surface of the septic system can reduce the potential for freezing.
Tip: Keep the snowmobile off the surface of the septic tank!
